Bali will close for a day!

On March 29, 2025, Bali islands in Indonesia will close for Nyepi Day. For 24 hours, there will be no businesses, transport, internet, TV, or radio.

Even Ngurah Rai International Airport will close. This is to ensure peace and quiet during the festival.

What is Nyepi?

Nyepi is also called the Day of Silence. It is the Balinese New Year. It is an important day for Bali Hindus, but everyone can enjoy the quiet time. The date changes each year because it follows the Saka calendar.

On Nyepi, people follow four rules from 6 AM for 24 hours:

  • No fire or electricity (Amati Geni)
  • No working (Amati Karya)
  • No travelling (Amati Lelungan)
  • No noise or fun activities (Amati Lelanguan)
How do people celebrate?

Before Nyepi, people hold special ceremonies. One is the Ogoh-Ogoh parade, the day before Nyepi. People make big, scary dolls called Ogoh-Ogoh. These dolls represent evil spirits. At the end of the parade, they burn the dolls to remove bad energy.

On Nyepi Day, people stay at home or in hotels. They do not cook, talk loudly, or turn on lights. Local guards check the streets to make sure no one is outside.

Hotels offer basic services like swimming pools. Some hotels have special activities like meditation and stargazing. Hospitals stay open only for emergencies.

After Nyepi, people celebrate Ngembak Geni, which means "relighting the fire." Families and friends meet to say sorry for past mistakes and forgive each other.
