Why has the BCCI retired MS Dhoni’s jersey number?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to honour MS Dhoni for his great work with the Indian cricket team by retiring his No. 7 jersey. This means that no other Indian player can use the number 7 while playing for the Indian team.

MS Dhoni, who is considered India’s most successful cricket captain, retired from all international cricket formats in 2020. However, he still plays for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Have other teams or organisations retired jerseys in tribute to their players?

This is the second time the BCCI has retired a jersey. They honoured Sachin Tendulkar by retiring his jersey number 10 in 2017. Napoli, an Italian football team, did the same for the amazing Diego Maradona. They retired his No.10 jersey in 2000 because he was a legend for the team.

Cricket Australia did a similar thing for Phillip Hughes after he passed away tragically. The LA Lakers, a basketball team, also did it for Shaquille O'Neal in 2013. O'Neal was really important for the team and a super good basketball player.

These are some famous athletes whose jersey numbers were retired. Teams do this to show respect to players who did great things for the team or to remember players who died tragically.

What are some major achievements of MS Dhoni as the India team captain?

MS Dhoni led India to win the T20 World Cup in 2007. Under his leadership, India also won the 2011 ICC World Cup, marking a historic moment for the team. Previously, India had won the World Cup in 1983.

Dhoni also led the Indian team to win two Asia Cups, one in 2010 and another in 2016. In 2013, he won the ICC Champions Trophy. These are some of his major achievements as captain of the Indian cricket team.
