Bumble Bees First Insect to Like Playtime

Bumble bees were observed playing with wooden balls in a recent study.

Bumble Bees First Insect to Like Playtime

What research has been conducted?

According to a study, bumble bees enjoy playing with balls like humans and dogs (isn’t that cute?). The bees were the first insects to be seen playing with small wooden balls.

The findings of this study give more proof that the minds of bees are more [[complex::Something that is not easy to understand.]] than we thought. This study also shows that bees can have positive emotions.

A team of [[researchers::Someone who studies a subject deeply, usually to discover new information in it.]] from the Queen Mary University of London, England, did several [[experiments::A scientific test carried out to gain new knowledge.]]. The bumble bees were found to roll the wooden balls even when there was no benefit to doing so. 45 bumble bees were [[monitored::To watch something for a period of time in order to notice any changes or to find out anything new about it.]] in an area for this study.

Individual bees rolled the balls between 1 and 117 times during the experiment. This behaviour shows that the bees enjoyed rolling the balls.

In another experiment, 42 bees were allowed to enter two different coloured chambers. One chamber was always full of movable balls, while the other was always empty. When the bees were tested later, after removing the balls from the chambers, they entered the one that had the balls earlier.

The experiments showed that the bees moved the balls to play. They did not roll the balls to receive a reward - they simply enjoyed playing with them!

This study shows that bumble bees can also experience positive emotions. This shows that insect minds are more complex than previously thought.

What did we learn from this article?

This article tells us that there is still a lot to learn about insects like bumble bees. We will be able to protect them if we understand them better. The study's findings should also [[encourage::Convince someone to do something by making them believe that it is the right thing to do.]] us to protect life on Earth even more.

Quick Revision

  • Bumble bees were seen playing with wooden balls for fun, not for reward.

  • Experiments showed bees preferred places where they played earlier.

  • This proves bees can feel positive emotions.

  • Their minds are more complex than once thought.

  • Understanding this helps us protect insect life better.
