Who is the new Prime Minister of Canada?
Mr. Mark Carney, from the Liberal Party, will be the next Prime Minister (PM) of Canada. This is his first time in politics. He is an economist and has worked as the Governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
Before, Mr. Carney had three citizenships: Canadian, British, and Irish. Canada allows people to have more than one citizenship, but now he has chosen to keep only Canadian citizenship.
What happened to Mr. Trudeau?
In January, Mr. Justin Trudeau, the former PM, decided to leave his job. He was not very popular, and there were problems in his party.
The Liberal Party then had to choose stsrt a leadership contest to find the next PM. On Monday, the party president said that Mr. Mark Carney will be the new leader.
How is the Prime Minister chosen in Canada?
In many countries, people vote for the government, and the government chooses the Prime Minister.
In Canada, each party chooses its leader in a special election. Any Canadian citizen or permanent resident can join a party and vote.
The election happens in 343 areas (ridings) in Canada to make sure the leader has support from all parts of the country. People vote using a ranked system. They list the candidates in order from first choice to last choice.
If no one gets 50% of the votes in the first round, the candidate with the fewest votes is removed. Their votes go to the other candidates. This happens again and again until one candidate gets a majority.
What’s next for Mr. Carney?
Mr. Carney will be the new PM, but he is not a Member of Parliament (MP) yet. He will try to win a seat in the House of Commons in the October election.
Some people think he might have an early election, but he can only do this after he becomes PM and chooses a team of ministers to run the government.
