Who is the Dalai Lama?
The Dalai Lama is the leader of Tibetan Buddhism. It is a branch of Buddhism that began around 1,400 years ago in Tibet. They believe that the Dalai Lama is the god of kindness who helps humanity.
Tibetan Buddhists believe in reincarnation. This means a person's soul is reborn into a new body after death. They believe that each Dalai Lama is a reincarnation of the first Dalai Lama, who died in 1475.

Tenzin Gyatso is the 14th and present Dalai Lama. When China invaded Tibet, he and some of his supporters escaped to India. The Dalai Lama is a global traveller who spreads a message of peace and supports Tibet’s political independence.
Recently, the Dalai Lama declared a Mongolian kid born in the United States to be the reincarnation of Tibetan Buddhism's third most important spiritual leader.
Who is this child?
An eight-year-old child was photographed with the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh. The Dalai Lama says the child is the 10th reincarnation of Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoché, the third most important spiritual leader in their community.

The previous Rinpoché had passed away in 2012. In 2016, the Dalai Lama announced that the 10th Khalkha Jetsun Dhampa Rinpoché had been reincarnated in Mongolia. The news of the child's reincarnation has started celebrations in Mongolia.
