<h5>Ecuador goes dark!</h5><p>We’re sure you are enjoying your summer vacation. Now, imagine you’re chilling in your room with the AC on, and suddenly a power cut plunges you into darkness.</p><p>You think the power will be back in some time. But, you soon realise that it’s not just your neighbourhood that is affected but the entire country!</p><p>Just imagining this sounds irritating, right? Well, recently, Ecuador experienced a nationwide power outage on 19th June 2024 that lasted for several hours and kept over 17 million (17000000) people in darkness.</p><figure class="image"><img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/newsahoot.appspot.com/Blackout_95feb5bf73.jpg" alt="Blackout.jpg"><figcaption>Blackout scenes in Ecuador. Photo by Milva Gauto.</figcaption></figure><h5>What caused the blackout?</h5><p>Roberto Luque, Ecuador’s public works minister, said that the nationwide blackout happened due to the failure of an energy transmission line.</p><p>He blamed the lack of investment in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution for this crisis.</p><h5>How did it affect the nation?</h5><p>The power outage affected houses, hospitals, metros, and other infrastructure. Fortunately, hospitals had backup power generators, which kept them functioning during the blackout.</p><p>Citizens were left disgruntled by the nationwide blackout, which interrupted many of them at work. Educational institutions also suspended night classes.</p><p>In short, the blackout disrupted the daily lives of citizens across the nation. While some struggled to stay cool in the hot weather, others faced difficulties with their daily tasks that depended on electricity.</p><p>Thankfully, power was restored soon after, bringing a sigh of relief to the citizens.</p><h5>Problems with electricity generation in Ecuador.</h5><p>Even before the recent power outage, the country has been facing electricity generation problems. Earlier, in April 2024, the government declared an energy emergency and ordered eight-hour nationwide power cuts to conserve electricity.</p><p>The country depends on hydroelectric sources for most of its power and faced a major drought this year, causing a water shortage.</p><p>This affected the country’s power generation, which caused the country to face an energy crisis and increased power cuts.</p>

The country faced a nationwide blackout recently. Thankfully, the power is back.
