Education System Neglects the Importance of Plants: Scientists

Plants give us so much - fruits, flowers, oxygen, etc. Still, research shows that the study of plants is slowly fading out in schools and colleges. Let’s find out why.

Education System Neglects the Importance of Plants: Scientists
Is the study of plants slowly disappearing?

Nature is so kind, it gives us many things. Plants and trees give us fruits, flowers, and even medicine. We know this because plants have been studied for many, many years. A study in the United Kingdom (UK) shows that many schools and colleges have stopped teaching kids about plants. Scientists say that this neglect of knowledge about plants will be really bad for us in the future.

Why don’t people want to study plants anymore?

Earlier, almost every school used to teach students about plants. But now studying about plants isn’t well-liked by many kids. That could be the reason why plant study is slowly disappearing from schools and colleges.

How will this affect humankind?

Scientists study not only plants that exist today, but also plants that existed years ago. Studying all these plants helps us find out about new and old plants on the planet. It helps us understand how plants change over time. Research says that ignoring the study of plants might make our environmental problems worse. It is believed that plants could be the answer to our biggest environmental problems, like climate change.

How will knowledge of plants help us save the planet?

A world without the study of plants could mean a world without plants! If people don’t understand or love our flora, then how will it survive? If we don’t care for them, many plants may even be wiped off the planet.

Knowing more about plants could help us spot a rare flower in the garden! It may even help us avoid itchy or harmful plants!

Plant knowledge can help us in so many ways. For example, farmers have to know all about plants and plant diseases. It helps them grow better crops. Architects can also learn about plants and then design buildings that won’t harm the plants around them.

Can we turn this situation around?

Yes! We can still bring about change. Schools can start by teaching us more about plants, both inside and outside the classroom. You could ask your science teacher to take the class on a fun nature walk around school!
