What discoveries have been made in Iraq?

Archaeologists have recently discovered two amazing sites in Iraq that tell us a lot about the ancient history of an old civilization.

They discovered the ruins of a 4700-year-old public eating area (like a restaurant) in Lagash, a major Sumerian civilization site. An oven, seats, and an old clay refrigerator called a "zeer" were discovered.

A 4,500-year-old palace in the ancient city of Girsu was also discovered in southern Iraq.

Why is the discovery of these sites important?

The recent finding of "zeer" and leftover food in Lagash can give insight into the lives of ordinary people who lived there 4,700 years ago. Isn’t it cool to know that people in ancient times used a clay fridge to keep food from spoiling, as they had no electricity back then?

The recently discovered palace can tell us more about Sumerian history. This is because the site contains over 200 cuneiform tablets with administrative data about Girsu.

Girsu is among the oldest cities ever discovered. This city is regarded as the birthplace of urban society. So, the discoveries can also help historians better understand the ancient Sumerian civilization.
