<h5>What is INS Vikrant?</h5>  <p>India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier was inducted into the Indian Navy on 2nd September 2022. The first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, will reinforce India's position as a marine force with global reach and the ability to operate in deep oceans.</p>
<p>The ship was designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau (WDB) and was built for Rs 20,000 crore by Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi, Kerala. The INS Vikrant was designed with cutting-edge systems and is the largest ship ever built in India's naval history.</p>
<p>It has been equipped with a large number of locally made equipment and machinery that major industrial firms in the country have made. 'Vikrant' was named after its historic predecessor, India's first aircraft carrier, which played an important role in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.</p>
<p>During the 1971 war, the original INS Vikrant served as the Eastern Fleet's focal point. India had bought this ship from the British. During this war, the INS Vikrant carried out over 300 airstrikes. The INS Vikrant shut off Pakistan's army's access to the Bay of Bengal, forcing them to surrender.

      </figure> <p>According to the Indian Navy, INS Vikrant is 262 meters long and measures as much as two football fields. This ship is said to be a floating city with 18 floors, 14 decks, and 2,300 compartments that can carry over 1,500 people. It also features specialised quarters for female officers and sailors.</p>
<p>The aviation hangar is the size of two Olympic-size pools and can house up to 20 aircraft. INS Vikrant can carry around aircraft, including MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31 multi-role helicopters, etc.</p>
<p>Recently, the first aircraft landed on the flight deck of INS Vikrant. A naval version of India's home-grown Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and the MiG-29K landed successfully on INS Vikrant. These successful trials show that the aircraft carrier is ready to defend the country.
</p> <h5>What is the importance of making INS Vikrant?</h5>  <p>The Indian Navy has achieved a historical milestone towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) by making this ship. It showcases India's ability to design, develop, build, and operate an indigenous aircraft carrier equipped with fighter aircraft. Based on this, more indigenous carriers can be built to protect the country.</p>
<p>Top Indian commanders have been pushing for a third carrier in addition to INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant for some years. The plan is for India to have two carriers at any given moment in time.
