Which state has come up with this new rule?
The Uttar Pradesh government recently made a new rule as part of the Safe City Project.
They say that girls cannot go to coaching classes after 8 pm. The state government says the rule has been made to protect girls.
Boys are still allowed to go to coaching classes after 8 pm. Coaching centres will be in trouble if they don't follow this rule. Girls can be provided with online classes, which they can take from their homes.
Why are there protests about this rule?

Many people are upset about this rule because they think it's not fair. It says girls can't go to classes after a certain time. A lot of girls work during the day and then go to classes in the evening to study for job exams, upskilling, etc.
Some girls also take care of their younger siblings during the day. When their parents come home from work, they go to evening classes. This new rule makes it tough for them to reach their goals. Some people think rules should keep everyone safe without treating boys and girls differently.
People are also saying that well-lit streets and police patrols would make cities safer for girls. Girls should be provided with affordable late-night buses or autos. Police should watch areas where crimes happen more to keep women safe. There should be helpline numbers for women's safety.
Bad things can happen at any time of the day, not just after 8 pm. The government should come up with better rules to stop crime and not stop girls from achieving their dreams. A “safe city” should mean a girl feels safe all the time.
What is the Safe City Project?
UP’s Safe City Project wants to make sure women, kids, and older people in the state are safer. They are putting many cameras in different places like schools, colleges, and coaching centres. These cameras help watch over and protect people.
Private coaching places are also getting guidelines to keep girls safe. The rules say that coaching centres should take care of girls' safety from arrival until leaving. Also, the coaching institutes are being watched to prevent troublemakers from gathering and causing any trouble in front of them.
