Many people got pets during the lockdown. But what makes us want pets, how much of responsibility are they and how do they help us?

Having Pets - The Importance of Companionship
Why do people want pets?

Humans have always liked companionship, be it with other humans or with animals. Did you feel happy that you won a prize in a competition at your school? Or sad, because you fought with a friend? For many of us, pets help us share how we feel.

Humans first domesticated wolves more than 10,000 years ago. Slowly, they also began to domesticate dogs, cats, and even farm animals. These animals were used as food, to find other animals to hunt, or just for their closeness to humans. Today, pets are raised in houses like family members.

How much responsibility is having a pet?

Raising a pet is like looking after your own child. You will have to care for it, clean up after it, feed it, give it attention, play with it and even take it out for walks or exercise. Not all people are ready for such responsibility, even if they feel they are.

This is why it is important to only adopt pets when you and all your family members are ready to share the responsibility of a new furry family member.

What are the benefits of keeping a pet at home?

There are many benefits of having a pet. For one, pets are instant mood lifters. If you had a bad day at school or anywhere else, the sight of your dog’s wagging tail or your cat's cute purrs will always bring a smile to your face.

Pets will share your feelings and love you no matter what. Pets teach us responsibility, kindness, empathy, and love. They help us become better human beings.
