Kilauea erupts!
The Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, USA, just erupted! This volcano is one of the most active in the world. When it erupted, hot lava and smoke shot into the sky.
Luckily, the volcano is in a safe place called the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (HVNP). This park is far from where most people live, so no one is in danger right now.
But there is something called volcanic smog that can be harmful. It has a gas called sulphur dioxide, which can make it hard to breathe, especially for people with asthma or heart problems.
About Kilauea volcano.
Kilauea is a special type of volcano called a shield volcano. It’s wide and flat, like a big shield lying on the ground. Unlike tall, pointy volcanoes, Kilauea’s shape is much flatter.
Kilauea has erupted many times. It has been very active since 1983, and last erupted in June and September of 2024. In 2018, a big eruption destroyed over 700 homes.
The area around the volcano is closed to visitors because the ground can crack and rocks can fall. People should be careful around the volcano!
Also, the HVNP is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, meaning it is very special. Many tourists come to see Kilauea and the Mauna Loa volcano. But it’s important to always be careful when there’s volcanic activity!
Precautions are being taken.
Officials are keeping an eye on the volcano. They are working with park officials to make sure everyone is safe.
