What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI for short, is an amazing technology that helps computers think and make decisions, just like humans do. It's like having a smart robot friend that can help us with all sorts of tasks (remember JARVIS from the Ironman movies?)

AI is made up of two important parts: data and algorithms. Data is information that computers collect from the world around them. It can be anything from pictures and videos to words and numbers. Algorithms are a set of instructions that tell the computer what to do with the data.

How does Artificial Intelligence work?

At first, AI is like a newborn baby that knows absolutely nothing. Parents have to teach their baby everything by telling it stories, showing it pictures, giving it examples, etc. But it takes a baby many years to learn new things as it grows. AI, on the other hand, learns much faster.

Let's say you show an AI robot many pictures of cats and dogs and tell it which is which.  The robot looks for patterns and learns to tell the difference between cats and dogs. Then, when you show it a new picture, it can guess whether it's a cat or a dog based on what it has learned.

AI systems use algorithms, which are like sets of instructions, to process information and make decisions. The more examples they see, the better they get at understanding things.

The information we give the computer is the data, and how it recognises the patterns and understands the information is the algorithm. In the end, humans are still the ones who decide what AI learns and how it helps us.

What are some recent developments in AI?

Recently, AI chat companions have become quite popular. These chat companions are designed to talk with you and offer solutions to any problems you tell them. Two of the leading ones are called ChatGPT and Bard.

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot developed by a company called OpenAI. It was launched on November 30, 2022. It can understand what you say and respond in a way that makes sense. Whether you want to solve a math problem, ask a riddle, or just have a fun conversation, it’s like chatting online with a very helpful friend!

Bard is a special chat service created by Google. It's an experiment that lets you have conversations with a computer. Just like ChatGPT, it can talk to you and answer your questions. It has become ChatGPT’s biggest competitor.

They're like virtual friends that are always ready to help and entertain you. But remember, even though ChatGPT and Bard are clever, they are still machines. They often make mistakes and give wrong answers. AI still needs humans to guide it in order to be helpful. So, always use these AI tools responsibly and ask an adult if you're not sure about something.
