What is Eid?

Eid is a festival celebrated by Muslims all over the world. Muslims are people who follow the religion of Islam. There are two types of Eid - Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. They are both celebrated differently. Let’s see what makes them different from each other.

The Two Eids.

First comes Eid al-Fitr. This happens after a long month of fasting called Ramadan. Those keeping a fast can only eat and drink after the sun sets and before the sun rises the next morning. Eid al-Fitr was on the 22nd of April this year.

The second is Eid al-Adha. During this festival, families buy the meat of an animal (mostly a sheep or goat) and share it with their neighbours and friends, usually in the form of tasty biryani! Eid al-Adha is on the 29th of June this year.

Both Eids have some things in common. Muslims celebrate Eid to thank Allah (the Arabic word for God) for his blessings. Eid is also a time to visit friends, give gifts and wear brand-new clothes. And who can forget the amazing food!

The feast is the best part! Delicious snacks are made for all, followed by yummy chicken curries or biryanis, followed by a sweet dish like halwa or seviyan.

Do children have to fast as well?

Only healthy adults fast during Ramadan. Children don’t usually have to fast. Though some often want to keep a fast since all the elders around them do so as well.

How can I be nicer to my Muslim friends during Ramadan?

Not eating for most of the day can make us feel weak. So, it’s best to be kind and helpful to our fasting friends. Don’t forget to wish your friends Eid Mubarak!
