What is the Environment Performance Index?

The Environment Performance Index (EPI) is an international report that rates the environment of countries all around the world. It’s released once every two years.

To prepare the report, researchers look at three main categories in which a country is helping or harming its environment. These are: 1. Ecosystem vitality

2. Environmental health

3. Climate change performance EPI 2022 rated 180 countries based on their environment. Let’s see which countries performed the best and the worst.

Which countries performed the best and the worst on the EPI 2022?

Denmark, the United Kingdom (UK), Finland, Malta, and Sweden are the five most environmentally healthy countries in the world.

India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Pakistan are the five most low-scoring countries on the EPI.

How did India perform on the EPI 2022?

India scored the lowest on the EPI, with a rank of 180. That means it is the least environmentally-friendly country in the world.

India’s score was so low since it lost huge areas of forests, grasslands, etc. in recent times. Its air and water quality have also been poor. Big companies are continuously expanding to make more money. In this process, they are harming the environment.

How did the government of India react to India’s ranking on the EPI 2022?

The Government of India didn’t agree with the findings of the report at all. They said that it was unfair to compare a huge country like India to a tiny rich country like Denmark. A large amount of India’s electricity comes from renewable energy, which is a massive win against climate change.

The Government also pointed out that India was spending a lot of money on renewable energy and electric cars. The result of these efforts will make the environment better.

While India didn’t do its best this year, let’s hope things will be much better the next time around!
