<h5>Indian astronaut picked to travel to the ISS!</h5><p>India is set to make history with its first mission to the International Space Station (ISS).</p><p>The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has selected Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as the primary astronaut for the upcoming India-US mission to the ISS. Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair has been named as the backup astronaut.</p><p>If the mission goes as planned, Shukla will become the second Indian to go to space, following Rakesh Sharma in 1984. He will also be the first Indian to visit the ISS.</p><p>ISRO made the announcement as part of the Axiom-4 mission. The mission is scheduled to launch on or after October 2024.</p><h5>About Shubhanshu Shukla.</h5><p>Born in 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla is an accomplished pilot with extensive flying experience in the Indian Air Force (IAF). His impressive aviation skills include flying various aircraft such as the Sukhoi-30MKI, Mig-21, and Mig-29.</p><p>He has trained exceptionally hard during his glorious career, and it has paid off as it led to his selection as an astronaut. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/who-is-going-on-the-gaganyaan-mission">He has also been selected as an astronaut for India’s Gaganyaan mission.</a></p><h5>About Axiom-4 mission!</h5><figure class="image"><img alt="ISS.jpg" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/newsahoot.appspot.com/ISS_6b88f3b29e.jpg"><figcaption>The International Space Station. It is supported by SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft. The mission will launch from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida and last for 14 days.</p><p>In this mission, India (through ISRO), Poland (with European Space Agency (ESA) support), Hungary, and the USA are partnering with Axiom Space to send their respective astronauts to the ISS.</p><p>This mission's goals include conducting scientific research, technology demonstration, and exploring the commercialisation potential in space.</p><p>It also aims to foster cooperation through knowledge and resource sharing allowing the partners to thrive within the growing space community.</p>
