<h5>Why has the government reduced LPG prices?</h5><p>The central government lowered the price of domestic cooking gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), by Rs 200 per cylinder. This new rule became effective on 30th August 2023.</p><p>Many people think they did this because of elections scheduled in five states in the coming few months and next year's Lok Sabha elections. Elections will happen in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana.</p><p>The Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said this will help many families in the country. The PM has said that the government always tries to help the country’s citizens. However, the opposition parties have criticised this decision.</p><h5>What have the opposition parties said?</h5><p>The opposition parties have long criticised the government for the high cost of cooking gas. They think the government is only doing this because of the election. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the central government did this because the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lost the election in Karnataka.</p><p>He also said the government is scared because other parties joined to make the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/indian-opposition-parties-have-formed-an-alliance">I.N.D.I.A. alliance</a>. He added that the Congress governments in Karnataka and Rajasthan have given additional subsidies for LPG cylinders.</p><p>The CPI(M)'s general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, said that cylinder prices would be less if the government stopped collecting cess and surcharges on petroleum products.</p>

The prices have been reduced by Rs 200 per cylinder.
