Intel’s plan for laptops.
Have you ever needed a new laptop because your old one got slow? Many laptops today can't be fixed or upgraded except for memory or storage, so you have to buy a new one. But with desktop computers, you can change things.
Intel has a great idea to help with this problem. They want laptop makers to design laptops that you can upgrade. This way, you don’t need to buy a new laptop every time.
Intel wants to make a new design for laptops. This design will let you change parts like the motherboard, so your laptop lasts longer and saves you money. If more companies join this idea, it could also help make laptops cheaper and reduce electronic waste (e-waste).
Intel's modular design.
Right now, most laptops have a motherboard that is all in one piece. This makes laptops thin and small, but it also makes it hard to fix or upgrade.
Intel’s new design will split the motherboard into three parts: the main motherboard, the chip (which controls everything), and the ports (where you plug in things like a mouse or charger). This will make it easier to fix or upgrade your laptop.
You could even build your laptop using parts from different companies instead of just one brand! Intel also wants to create a new mini-PC with this design, so it’s easier to upgrade and fix, too.
Intel hopes other companies will agree to use this new design. Once they do, we may see these new laptops in stores.
Problem with e-waste.
The world has a big problem with e-waste. Every year, we throw away a lot of old electronics, but only a small amount is recycled. Many of these old gadgets end up in landfills, causing pollution.
Some of the chemicals in old electronics, like lead and mercury, can make people sick. Intel’s new laptop design can help reduce e-waste by making laptops last longer and easier to fix.
