<h5>About the International Space Station.</h5><p>The International Space Station (ISS) is a gigantic spacecraft that was sent into space years ago. It orbits the Earth and serves as a home for astronauts working and travelling in space.</p><p>Several countries (such as the USA, Russia, etc.) collaborated to build the ISS. The first piece of the massive space station was launched in 1998, and the first crew arrived on the ISS in 2000.</p><p>Over time, more pieces were added to it (like a jigsaw puzzle), and its construction was completed in 2011.</p><p>The space station helps conduct various scientific experiments. NASA has permitted SpaceX (Elon Musk’s company) to destroy it by 2030.</p><p>Even though the space station has helped conduct various experiments, the countries operating it have only agreed to keep it running until 2030.</p><p>SpaceX will build a machine that will tow the ISS from space to Earth. The structure will break into pieces as it enters the Earth’s atmosphere. But what if the broken pieces fall on our heads?</p><p>They won’t. Photo by Wikimedia Commons / Public Domain.</figcaption></figure><h5>Why is it being destroyed?</h5><p>The ISS is ageing and showing various technical issues, making it challenging to keep running.</p><p>Also, the contract signed by the countries to help it function will end by 2030, and it will be difficult for one nation to maintain it alone.</p><p>So, NASA has decided to destroy it, but finalising the machinery and destruction plans will take some time.</p><h5>No space stations in the future?</h5><p>Space stations will exist, but they will be made and maintained by private companies like SpaceX. These companies are building commercial space stations that could be launched soon.</p><p>These space stations will also host astronauts and help conduct experiments. Additionally, private companies might offer ordinary people the opportunity to visit space stations as part of space tourism.</p>
