The Vice-President (VP) is the second-highest position in India after the President. The President and the VP are the two most important people in India. While the President is mostly responsible for giving our leaders advice and guidance, the VP performs the same duties when the President is not available. The VP is the deputy of the President and performs the President’s role when the President is absent. The VP is also a Member of Parliament (MP) and is the Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. Apart from this, the VP holds the highest position in many universities run by the Government of India.
How is the VP elected?

Unlike the Presidential elections, where MPs and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) vote to elect the President, only the MPs can vote in the VP election. A VP is chosen for five years, and the current VP, Venkaiah Naidu, is completing his five years on 11th August 2022. Jagdeep Dhankar has been elected to be our next VP. Who is Jagdeep Dhankar?

Jagdeep Dhankar was born in Rajasthan, and he will become the 14th VP of India. He defeated his opponent Margaret Alva by 346 votes, the largest winning margin in VP elections since 1997. Before being elected as the VP, he was the Governor of Bengal before resigning in July 2022. He has also served as an MP from Rajasthan and an MLA in the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.
