<h5>Lung cancer: A deadly threat!</h5><p>Lung cancer is a serious health condition where cancerous cells grow uncontrollably in the lungs. This disease can be life-threatening. It is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, causing around 1.8 million deaths recently.</p><p>While smoking is the primary cause of lung cancer, non-smokers can also be affected. Other risk factors include exposure to secondhand smoke, air pollution, hereditary cancer syndromes, and chronic lung diseases.</p><p>The symptoms of this deadly disease include a persistent cough, chest pain and difficulty breathing, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, etc.</p><p>Early detection and treatment are crucial to stopping the disease from spreading to other parts of the body. However, if lung cancer is diagnosed at a later stage, it becomes more challenging to treat. Photo by UCLH.</figcaption></figure><p>Doctors have begun testing the first messenger RNA (mRNA) lung cancer vaccine in humans. The vaccine, named BNT116, was developed by BioNTech and utilises the same mRNA <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/scientists-behind-covid-vaccine-win-the-nobel-prize">technique used in COVID-19 vaccines</a>.</p><p>This technique helps the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells, preventing them from returning. This vaccine is intended to treat non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most common form of lung cancer.</p><p>The phase 1 trial is currently underway in seven countries: the United Kingdom, the USA, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain and Turkey. Many patients have been enrolled to participate in the trial.</p><p>Experts believe this vaccine has the potential to save thousands of lives and hope the trials are successful.</p><h5>How do mRNA vaccines work?</h5><p>mRNA acts as a message, assisting our cells in determining how to create specific proteins. Traditional vaccines use weakened or dead viruses to train our immune systems to fight diseases, but mRNA vaccines work differently.</p><p>Instead of using a virus, mRNA vaccines train our cells to produce a protein similar to the virus against which protection is necessary.</p><p>This triggers an immune response within our bodies because the immune system knows that protein doesn’t belong in our body. This reaction produces antibodies that protect us from becoming sick from the actual virus in the future.</p>

The vaccine, created by BioNTech, offers hope for treatment against this disease.
