<h5>What is happening in Manipur?</h5><p>Since early May 2023, there has been a lot of violence in the northeastern state of Manipur. Many people have gotten hurt, and some have even lost their lives. Many buildings and public services like transportation have also been damaged. Many people had to leave their homes and go somewhere else to stay safe from the ongoing violence.</p><p>It's been more than two months now, and the violence is still going on. There's no sign of it stopping soon.</p><h5>What is the reason behind the violence?</h5><figure class="image"><img src="https://firebasestorage.googleapis.com/v0/b/newsahoot.appspot.com/o/manipur-violence-explained%2F_130447217_manipur.jpg.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=1c1c977b-2473-4ced-9e08-bf7732b7a6ba"><figcaption>People protesting against the violence in Manipur. Photo by BBC</figcaption></figure><p>The different communities living in Manipur are fighting amongst themselves, which is the reason for all the ongoing violence. The Meitei community makes up more than half of the state’s population. Other tribes, such as the Nagas and Kukis, are also there.&nbsp;</p><p>The fighting between the different communities in Manipur started when the Manipur High Court recommended the state government include the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.</p><p>The Kuki tribe believes that giving the Meitei ST status will put them at a greater advantage than the other smaller tribes of that region. Moreover, if the Meitei community gets the ST status, they can buy land in the mountains.</p><p>The other tribes are scared that the Meiteis will buy all the land and force them to leave the state. The Meitei community says that they were recognised as a tribe before the state's merger with India in 1949. They also claim that they need more land as their place of stay is shrinking. All this has caused violence in the state.</p><h5>How will the violence end?</h5><p>The Manipur High Court is reviewing its earlier decision about giving ST status to the Meitei community. The state government is also trying to make things better. Let’s hope an agreement is reached soon to help bring back peace in the state.</p>

The unrest began in early May, and there’s no sign of it stopping.
