<h5>About the Hinduja Group</h5><p>The Hinduja Group is the richest family in the United Kingdom (UK). Before Independence, the family’s ancestor, Parmanand Deepchand Hinduja, had started a business that slowly turned into a global business empire.</p><p>The group also established an office in Iran and later moved to Europe. They expanded their business in various sectors, like shipping, banking, media, etc., opening multiple offices worldwide, and eventually became the richest family in the UK.</p><p>Recently, some family members were sentenced to jail by a Swiss court.</p><h5>Why have they been sentenced to jail?!</h5><figure class="image"><img alt="Bad person.jpg" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/newsahoot.appspot.com/Bad_person_96c1b1b745.jpg"><figcaption>Prakash Hinduja (left) during an event. Photo by Media Talk Africa.</figcaption></figure><p>Four members of the family, Prakash Hinduja and his wife Kamal Hinduja, their son Ajay and his wife Namrata, have been sentenced to jail for exploiting their household staff.</p><p>They have been accused of mistreating their domestic staff, who used to work in the family's Swiss villa. The staff were brought in from India, and once they landed in Switzerland, their passports were taken away.</p><p>The staff was also overworked, underpaid, and not even given proper breaks. The workers also received a salary that was much less than what must be paid to those working in Switzerland, making it difficult to sustain themselves.</p><p>The workers were also made to sleep on mattresses in the basement. The family has appealed to a higher court and hopes to overturn the verdict.</p><p>The Hinduja family is very wealthy and can afford to spend their days in luxury. Despite that, we see some instances in India where the law seems to favour the rich.</p><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/tragedy-shocks-the-nation">Remember how a wealthy person’s son hit two people while driving his father’s car</a> and was only made to write an essay? The law acted later after people criticised the decision.</p><p>It’s important that the law treats everyone equally, despite their wealth and social status. People would lose trust in the law if it discriminates between the rich and the poor!</p>
