What is the Women’s Premier League?

Do you follow the Indian Premier League (IPL)? Do you look forward to the start of it every year? But the IPL is a men's T-20 tournament. So, how can talented female cricketers compete in a tournament like this? For that, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) launched the Women’s Premier League (WPL).

The WPL’s first season was held in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai with five participating teams. The competition ran from 4th March to 26th March 2023. In the end, the Mumbai Indians were victorious.

How did the Mumbai Indians perform in this tournament?

Mumbai Indians got off to a good start in the tournament, defeating Gujarat Giants in their opening match. They won six out of eight games in the first round and ended second on the league table. So they reached the tournament's eliminator stage.

In this stage, they defeated UP Warriorz and advanced to the finals. They won the championship after defeating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the finals. The Mumbai Indians won the first edition of the WPL due to their excellent team performance.

What is the format of this tournament?

The WPL format is similar to the IPL. There are some changes due to the lesser number of participating teams in WPL. There were a total of twenty matches in the league stage. Each team faced the other teams twice. After the end of the league matches, the top-ranking team (Delhi Capitals) advanced directly to the finals.

The second and third-placed teams on the league table (Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz) had to play each other in the eliminators. The winning team reached the finals.

What did we learn from this article?

We learned that there are many talented female cricketers. The WPL gave them a chance to show their skills. Some of the world's best female cricketers participated in the WPL. Many young children in India can look up to them as role models.
