Who is Neeraj Chopra?
Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete competing in javelin throw competitions. He became famous after winning a gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
He is the first Indian track and field athlete to win the gold medal at the Olympics. He is the second Indian to win gold in the individual category of the Olympics after Abhinav Bindra. Recently, he won the silver medal at the Stockholm Diamond League (DL) held in Sweden. Let’s find out more about the DL.
What is the Diamond League?
The DL is a series of fourteen track and field events held in twelve countries every year. The world’s best track and field athletes compete in the DL. Neeraj Chopda has already won two silver medals at this year’s DL - one in Stockholm and one in the Doha DL in Qatar earlier this year.
Why is Neeraj Chopra’s performance so special?

The two silver medals at the DLs show that Chopra is performing well. He might even win gold medals in future DLs.
But, more importantly, his silver medals at the DL signify that he might win the World Athletics Championships (WAC) in July. If Chopra wins the WAC and gets the gold medal, he will become the world champion in throwing javelins.
However, winning at the WAC will not be easy for Chopra. He will have to face tough competition from others.
Who will give the toughest challenge to Neeraj Chopra?
Anderson Peters will be the toughest challenge for Chopra. Peters is the current world champion. He won the gold medal at both Stockholm and Doha DLs by beating Chopra. However, Chopra has also won against Peters in other competitions. Twenty-two Indians are competing at the upcoming WAC, including Chopra, and they need our support.
How can you show your support for the Indian athletes?
You can support them by watching them on TV when they go out to represent India. You can also ask your friends and family to watch them. Until then, let’s be proud of their achievements and keep cheering them on!
