How is urine converted into water?
Their new machine collects urine in a special cup inside their suit. Its pump turns on by itself when an astronaut begins to urinate.
After the pee is collected, it is turned into drinking water using a filtration system. Here's how it works:
- First, water is extracted from the urine using pressure to push it through a special filter that removes most impurities.
- Then, another part of the machine takes out the salt and adds good stuff called electrolytes to make the water healthy.
All of this happens really fast—it takes just five minutes to turn 500 ml of urine into clean water they can drink! The whole machine is light enough to carry on their suit.
