New Spacesuits for Upcoming NASA Moon Mission

This can solve the astronauts' need to drink water during longer missions.

New Spacesuits for Upcoming NASA Moon Mission

Spacesuit from the future!

Turning urine into drinkable water? Sounds gross, right? But wait, it's actually pretty amazing! Scientists found a cool way to help astronauts in space stay [[hydrated::To maintain the adequate levels of water required by our body.]].

Astronauts wear spacesuits to survive in space. But carrying enough water in their suits for long [[spacewalks::The duration of time spent in space by an astronaut outside of a spacecraft.]] is difficult. So, clever scientists at Cornell University had a great idea!

Do you know astronauts wear special [[diapers::A type of cloth that can be worn around someone's bottom and between its legs and can help hold body waste.]] in their suits to urinate? Well, these intelligent scientists figured out how to turn that urine into clean water they can drink!

They made a special device that can take this urine and turn it into safe drinking water. How awesome is that?

How is urine converted into water?

Their new machine collects urine in a special cup inside their suit. Its pump turns on by itself when an astronaut begins to urinate.

After the pee is collected, it is turned into drinking water using a [[filtration system::A mechanism designed to remove impurities from a substance, separate solids from liquids, etc.]]. Here's how it works:

  1. First, water is extracted from the urine using pressure to push it through a special filter that removes most impurities.

  2. Then, another part of the machine takes out the salt and adds good stuff called [[electrolytes::It refers to certain minerals essential for our body's functioning.]] to make the water healthy.

All of this happens really fast—it takes just five minutes to turn 500 ml of urine into clean water they can drink! The whole machine is light enough to carry on their suit.

Importance of this device!

Astronauts can't just go buy more water if they run out during their long spacewalks. Also, carrying too much water would make them slow and hard to move!

That's why scientists invented this super cool device that turns pee into water they can drink! This amazing invention allows astronauts to explore space and always have enough water to drink.
