<h5>Irresponsible woman overfeeds pet dog!</h5><p>Many of us have different pets, be it a good doggo or a cuddly cat. Pets are our valued friends who add comfort and joy to our lives. They have an extraordinary ability to brighten our days with their unconditional love.</p><p>However, they rely on us for their well-being, so we must take good care of them. Sadly, many don’t. A New Zealand court has sentenced a woman to jail for overfeeding her pet dog to death!</p><p>The dog, Nuggi, weighed 53.7kg at the time of its rescue. Its former owner fed it eight to ten pieces of chicken daily on top of dog biscuits. The poor dog became so obese that even hearing its heartbeat with a stethoscope became difficult due to all the fat.</p><figure class="image"><img alt="Nuggi 2.jpg" src="https://storage.googleapis.com/newsahoot.appspot.com/Nuggi_2_81748bbe94.jpg"><figcaption>Nuggi. Photo by The New Zealand Herald.</figcaption></figure><h5>Nuggi is no more!</h5><p>When the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) rescued Nuggi, he had difficulty walking due to his enormous weight. He had to stop at short distances to catch his breath, and his legs seemed to collapse under the weight.</p><p>It had several other wounds on its body. After being rescued, the dog spent two months at an SPCA-run animal shelter, losing 8.9kg, and was on his way to losing weight.</p><p>Sadly, good boi Nuggi passed away suddenly. Doctors did find several health issues with the dog. His former owner has been sentenced to two months in jail and fined $975 (Rs 81,609). She is also not allowed to own dogs for a certain time period.</p><p>The story has caused anger and raised important questions regarding pet care and responsibility.</p><h5>Responsibility for keeping a pet.</h5><p><a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.newsahoot.com/articles/having-pets--the-importance-of-companionship">Keeping and raising a pet is a huge responsibility</a>. Our pets are like family members and must be well cared for. They require as much attention as if looking after one’s own child.</p><p>You will be responsible for cleaning up after it, feeding it, paying attention to it, playing with it, and possibly taking it for walks or exercise.</p><p>You will also need to clean them by bathing or grooming them regularly, visit the vet for timely health checkups, and provide them with a space to rest!</p><p>Many do adopt pets but struggle to take care of them properly, which can lead to their untimely deaths. Some pets are even abandoned by their owners and find it difficult to survive on the streets, alone and scared.</p><p>So, adopting pets should only be done when everyone in your family is willing to take care of them and love them unconditionally.</p>
