Oscars 2025 – Highlights!
The 97th Academy Awards, also called the Oscars, were held last Sunday in Los Angeles (LA), USA.
For the first time, the event was broadcast live on Hulu (an online platform), ABC (a US TV channel), and in 200 countries. In India, you can watch it on JioHotstar.
During the show, there was a special moment to honour firefighters and first responders who helped fight the LA wildfires in January 2025.
Why is Los Angeles important in the film world?
In the early 1900s, many filmmakers moved to LA because the city had sunny weather all year and beautiful locations for filming.
The area called Hollywood soon became the film capital of the world when big movie studios like Paramount, Warner Bros, and Universal set up their offices. By 1921, 80% of the world’s movies were made in LA!
The first Oscars were held in Hollywood in 1929. Over time, LA also became an important city for music and television.
What makes the Oscars special?
The Oscars are awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to celebrate the best movies, actors, and filmmakers every year.
Since the Oscars are the oldest movie awards, they are considered the most prestigious. In 2024, the Academy had 9,905 members from over 90 countries, and these members voted to decide the winners.

The Amazing Maurice – Based on a book by Terry Pratchett, this movie follows Maurice, a clever cat, and his group of talking rats. They trick towns by pretending there is a plague, until they face an unexpected danger!
Wicked – A live-action movie based on a Broadway musical. It tells the untold story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and her surprising friendship with Glinda the Good in the magical land of Oz.
