Who is Marvia Malik?

Marvia Malik is a transgender woman from Pakistan. She became known as the first transgender TV news anchor in the country. A transgender person is someone who believes their gender is different from the one they were born with. They may dress differently or use a different name to match their gender identity.

Malik was born in 1997 in Lahore, Pakistan. She was bullied in school. Still, she finished her education and became a news anchor in 2018 (how inspirational!). Not everyone is impressed with her, though.

Recently, she survived a gun attack near her home. Two men shot at her when she was outside her home. Luckily, she was not hurt. Even before the attack, she had been receiving threats due to her activism.

She ignored any discrimination against her and followed her dreams. So, she believes that her success can improve awareness about the community across Pakistan. She wishes to show that transgender people are capable of achieving anything if given the chance.

What are the transgender rights in India?

Transgender rights in India have slowly improved. The Supreme Court of India recognised them as a third gender in 2014. This gave them certain rights related to education, employment, and healthcare. Later, a law was passed to protect them against discrimination and violence.

Still, transgender people face social stigma, discrimination, and violence. They are not given jobs or are paid less than their colleagues.

But, there is some progress as more companies are hiring them and treating them with respect. Even though progress has been made, more has to be done to help them.

We learned about a person who is trying to speak for the benefit of her community. Marvia Malik suffered a lot of discrimination, yet she never gave up. There is too much hatred in the world sometimes. But, regardless of their gender, everyone deserves to be treated with kindness and respect.
