About Tasmania.

Tasmania is the smallest state in Australia. It’s a big island shaped like a triangle! The capital city is Hobart, which is also the biggest city on the island.

Tasmania has a lot of nature. There are flat areas called plateaus and tall mountains in the west. There are more than 4,000 lakes, and two big rivers, the Derwent and the South Esk, flow across the island.

This island is also home to special animals like the Tasmanian devil – a small but fierce creature you won’t find anywhere else.

Around 500,000 people live there. Most people stay in the southeast and northern parts of the island. Did you know that people have lived in Tasmania for over 40,000 years? The first people were Aboriginal Australians.

Early humans used fire in Tasmania!

New studies show that Aboriginal people used fire to change the land over 2,000 years earlier than scientists thought before! They burned forests and grasslands to make space for food and other activities.

What does this research highlight?

Scientists think we can learn a lot from how the Aboriginal people cared for the land. Their clever use of fire helped them survive and shaped the environment in smart ways. This knowledge might help us take better care of nature today!
