Using screens before bed can hurt sleep!

A study in Norway found that using screens before bed can make it harder to sleep. It increases the risk of insomnia by 59% and can shorten sleep by 24 minutes.

This happens with all screens—phones, computers, or TVs—no matter what people watch or read on it. Even one hour of screen time at night can cause poor sleep.

However, scientists say the study is based on self-reports from 40,000 people, so the results may not be true for everyone around the world.

What is Insomnia?

Insomnia is a problem where people cannot fall or stay asleep. It also causes daytime sleepiness at least three times a week for three months.

Not getting enough sleep can make people feel tired, sad, and forgetful. Over time, it can also cause health problems like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

Some people have a higher chance of getting insomnia, such as those who:

  • Have family members with insomnia
  • Are older
  • Feel stressed, anxious, or depressed
  • Work at unusual times
How to sleep better?

Lowering screen brightness or using night mode is not enough. Studies show that just using a screen can make sleep worse.

Experts suggest:

  • Stopping screen use 2-3 hours before bed
  • Sleeping and waking up at the same time every day
  • Avoiding caffeine and heavy meals before bed
  • Doing light exercise in the evening
  • Getting sunlight during the day to help the body’s sleep cycle
