Snowfall in the desert.
Imagine waking up in the desert and seeing... snow! Sounds crazy, right? But this happened in Saudi Arabia’s Al-Jawf region. Usually, this desert is hot and full of sand, but for the first time, it was covered in snow!
People were so surprised that they quickly took photos and videos to share on social media.
What caused the snowfall?
Saudi Arabia has had some very strange weather. It has been raining a lot since the last week of October, with even some hail. Then, all of a sudden, the cold arrived and turned the rain into snow in the mountainous areas!
Experts from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) say that the strange weather was caused by a low-pressure system (a type of weather) that moved from the Arabian Sea to Oman. This brought wet air to the desert, and that’s why there were thunderstorms, hail, and snow!
The weather experts warn that there might be more thunderstorms soon. They’ve asked people to be careful!
Not the first such event.
Even though snow is super rare in Saudi Arabia, it’s not the first time. Earlier this year, in February, snow also fell in the mountains of Al-Lawz.
And it’s not just Saudi Arabia! A few years ago, a town in the Sahara desert had snow after the temperature dropped suddenly. Even Riyadh (Saudi Arabia’s capital city) and Dubai have had floods because of heavy rain!
Experts think these strange weather events are because of climate change. The weather is getting more extreme, with snow or rain happening in places that don’t usually see it. That’s why we must take care of our planet to slow climate change.
