Understanding and combating cyberbullying
"Hey, did you see what they posted about me online?" Raj asked his friend, looking upset. His peers made cruel comments about his artwork that he posted online.
This is a common problem in schools today, where the internet can sometimes be unkind.
What is cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when someone repeatedly uses digital platforms to harm or scare others. This includes sending mean messages, spreading rumours, or sharing embarrassing photos. Words and actions online can hurt just as much as those in person.
Impact of cyberbullying:
Cyberbullying can have serious effects on victims, including:
- Emotional problems: Feeling anxious or lonely.
- Physical symptoms: Headaches and stomach aches.
- Academic issues: Lower grades and less participation in school.
- Trust issues: Finding it hard to trust others.
How to be kind and respectful online
Disagreeing kindly: It’s okay to have different opinions but express them respectfully. Instead of saying, “That’s a stupid idea,” try, “I see your point, but I think differently because…”
Giving constructive comments: If someone shares something like art, instead of saying it's bad, say what you like about it and how it could be even better.
Encouraging positive interaction: Say nice things to others! Simple comments like “Great job!” or “I really enjoyed your presentation” can encourage and motivate your peers.
In India, cyberbullying is recognized under the Information Technology Act of 2000. Schools are encouraged to have anti-bullying programs in place to create a safe and supportive learning environment.
