Why is Teachers’ Day celebrated?

Teachers' Day, also known as Shikshak Divas, is celebrated on 5th September every year in India. This day is celebrated to honour India’s first Vice President and former President, scholar, philosopher, and Bharat Ratna awardee, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was born on this day in 1888.

When Dr. Radhakrishnan became President in 1962, his students wanted to make his birthday a special day. But he asked them to celebrate it as a day to thank teachers for their important role in society.

Dr. Radhakrishnan was a highly educated person who taught at different colleges abroad and in India, like Chennai's Presidency College and Calcutta University. He even held an important job at the University of Oxford. So, celebrating his birthday as Teachers' Day is fitting.

What is done on this day?

At school, kids give their teachers flowers, sweets, chocolates, and handmade cards to express their gratitude. They also do special programmes and activities for their teachers. This day helps to show that students love, respect, and care about their teachers.

On this day, students can talk to their teachers in a friendly way. This can help them form bonds with their teachers.
