What is the United Kingdom’s new source of electricity?

Research from Imperial College London shows that wind power is the leading source of electricity in the United Kingdom (UK). It generated more electricity than gas for the first time in the first three months of this year.

This is an important step showing the UK is moving towards a clean energy future. By 2035, the UK hopes to achieve zero emissions for all of its electricity. Switching to renewable energy is very important to control the effects of climate change.

What is wind energy?

Energy generated with the help of wind is called wind energy. Wind turbines are used for this process. They are large structures that convert the energy of the wind into electricity. This electricity can help power homes, factories, companies, etc. Wind energy releases no greenhouse gases and is becoming less expensive than coal and natural gas.

Wind turbines are usually installed in areas with strong and consistent winds, such as hilltops or coastal regions. But there are certain disadvantages to wind energy. Wind turbines make a loud noise while running. Birds and bats can be killed when they hit the blades of the wind turbines. Still, wind energy can produce a large amount of electricity, and its use is growing.

How do wind turbines generate electricity?

Wind turbines are tall, tower-like structures with large, fan-like blades attached to them (imagine a very big pin-wheel). The wind forces the blades to spin like a fan. The turning of the blades spins a generator inside the tower, creating kinetic energy. The generator converts this energy into electricity.

Is wind energy used in India?

India is the world's fourth-largest generator of wind energy. The Indian government has promoted wind energy for many years. Most of India’s wind energy capacity is located in the country's southern, western, and northwestern areas.

Private companies, such as Tata Power, are also helping to develop wind energy generation in India. They are working in seven states, namely Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.
