<h5>Power plant unveiled.</h5><p>The world’s first dual-tower solar thermal power plant has been unveiled in China’s Gansu Province. This plant is designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.</p><p>Usually, conventional power plants burn coal, oil, etc., to convert water into steam, which is used to rotate attached turbines connected to generators to generate electricity.</p><p>Instead, this plant will use solar heat to convert water into steam, which will be used to generate electricity. Video by CGTN.</figcaption></figure></div><p>This newly unveiled power plant features two 200-metre-tall towers and 30,000 mirrors installed on the ground. The towers also share a steam turbine generator to help generate electricity.</p><p>The mirrors form vast overlapping circles, focusing sunlight onto the receiver at the top of each tower. The concentrated sunlight will heat water to produce steam and generate electricity.</p><p>Molten salt is also stored in the towers, functioning like thermal batteries. These towers store excess heat collected during the day and release it later to keep the generators running. As a result, unlike other solar power plants, this plant can produce electricity even at night.</p><p>The mirrors are made of special materials to increase their reflection efficiency. Furthermore, they are designed to automatically track the sun’s movement and direct sunlight to one tower in the morning and the other in the afternoon.</p><h5>Solar plants are part of a clean energy complex.</h5><p>This new power plant is part of a more extensive clean energy complex in the area that seeks to use solar, thermal, and wind power to generate a lot of energy annually while avoiding tons of carbon emissions.</p><p>The power plant can also be scaled up even further if and when required. The plant is currently being tested and is expected to be fully operational by 2024 end.</p><p>China’s latest power plant highlights how new technology is being used to produce clean energy more efficiently.</p>
