<h5>What is the Titanic tourist submersible?</h5><p>The Titanic tourist submersible, known as Titan, is a small underwater vessel used to visit the wreckage of the famous Titanic, which sank many years ago. The vessel can transport five people.</p><p>Submersibles are different from submarines as they have limited power reserves. So submersibles require a surface support ship to launch and recover them. It cannot stay underwater for as long as submarines.</p><p>Titan is tiny and designed to dive to depths of 2.5 miles (4 km). It also doesn’t have many facilities. The submersible is attached with a special window at one end. Also, a journalist who visited the Titanic wreckage on the Titan in 2022 was surprised to see that the vessel was operated using a video game controller. There are precautions in place in case the controller fails.</p><p>This submersible is owned by a company named OceanGate. OceanGate organises tours for tourists who want to visit shipwrecks. Since 2021, the company has given tours of the Titanic wreckage. Travellers wishing to see the wreckage have to pay a large amount of money. Recently, this submersible has gone missing in the North Atlantic Ocean (oh no!).</p><h5>When did this submersible go missing?</h5><p>Reports say that the submersible's support ship, the Polar Prince, lost touch with it around 900 miles (1,450 km) east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on 18th June 2023. It went missing with five people onboard about 1 hour and 45 minutes after it was launched.</p><p>It's still unclear what happened to the Titan, why it lost touch, and how close it was to the Titanic when it disappeared. Search operations are being carried out to rescue the passengers.</p><h5>What search operations are being carried out?</h5><p>Multiple agencies from the United States of America (USA) and Canada are involved in the search. Boats, aircraft, and radar equipment have been deployed to search the ocean’s surface. Sonar equipment is being used to detect any sounds beneath the ocean.</p><p>The search is being conducted by the US Coast Guard, US Navy, US Air Force, Canadian Coast Guard, and Canadian Forces. France has also sent a ship fitted with an underwater robot to assist in the search. Many other organisations have also offered help in the search for the missing submersible.</p><p>No trace of the missing vessel has been found yet. However, rescuers have reported hearing "noises" near where the vessel went missing. The sound source is being investigated by US Navy scientists, and underwater missions are being conducted to investigate the source.</p><p>Authorities believe the vessel has less than 30 hours of oxygen left. So, they are trying their best to search for and rescue the passengers as quickly as possible.</p><h5>Who are the people on board the vessel?</h5><p>The five people on board the Titan submersible are:</p><ul><li>Stockton Rush, OceanGate’s founder.</li><li>Hamish Harding, a British businessman and explorer</li><li>Shahzada Dawood and his son, Suleman. It was one of the largest, most luxurious ships ever built. It was so huge that it contained numerous rooms, restaurants, and a swimming pool. The Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, on 10th April 1912. It was on its way to New York City, the USA.</p><p>The ship carried around 2,200 passengers. For four days, the Titanic continued across the ocean perfectly. However, just hours before midnight on 14th April 1912, disaster struck. The ship hit an iceberg, and its hull got torn. Deep-sea explorers discovered the Titanic's wreckage in 1985 at a depth of 13,000 feet (4,000 metres) off the Canadian island of Newfoundland.</p>
