Who is making clothes out of recycled sea plastic?

Kerkennah Plast is a Tunisian company working with the Seaqual Initiative, a group dedicated to cleaning our oceans. Together, they are making recycled clothes using plastic waste found in seas and oceans. It is a European Union (EU)-funded project that aims to clean our oceans.

The Tunisian company also employs 15 plastic waste pickers under the EU-funded Kerkennah Plastic Free programme. These waste pickers collect rubbish from the beaches and give it to the Kerkennah Plast company.

What is done with the collected rubbish?

Kerkennah Plast crushes the sea plastic they collect. In Portugal, the plastic granules are turned into nylon fibre called "Seaqual Yarn." The "Seaqual Yarn", supplied by Seaqual Initiative, is then turned into denim fabric at the Sitex mill in Ksar Hellal, a coastal town in the southeast of the Tunisian city of Monastir.

The fabric is used to make fancy and expensive clothing for the eco-friendly Tunisian fashion company Outa. The company's founder, Anis Montacer, asked a famous designer named Maud Beneteau to create their first collection using this fabric. The collection of these clothes was shown at Tunis Fashion Week in June.
