What does Pride mean?
Pride is a celebration of the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer. These words describe who a person is attracted to.
Pride is all about celebrating the rights of queer people, especially their right to love and live freely.

LGBTQ people have been discriminated against throughout history. No one should be judged on who they choose to love, but queer people have had to face just that.
Why is June celebrated as the Pride month?
On 28th June 1969, the world’s first protest for LGBTQ rights, called the Stonewall Riots, took place in New York in the USA. It started a movement which led to the better treatment of LGBTQ people around the world.

Marches are held in many countries all around the world. These parades are full of people wearing flashy and colourful clothes, carrying inspiring slogans, dancing, singing and enjoying themselves.
What are some big Pride wins around the world?
Many countries have given important rights to LGBTQ people like getting married, adopting children and joining the army.
In India, same-sex relationships were not allowed for the longest time. But, they’re allowed now. That’s a huge Pride win for India. Even now, queer people cannot get married or adopt children.
So, there’s a long way for us to go. But we’ll get there. And until we do, let’s celebrate Pride!
