How did the human population grow?
A long time ago, we humans were very small in number. Humans used to live in small isolated groups all over the world. These groups had no idea that there were others like them.
However, over time, these groups met and started living together, leading to the rise in the human population. Today, there are close to eight billion people in the world.
But, this increase in our numbers has led to some problems. These many humans have negatively impacted the world.
Recently, the United Nations (UN) released the World Population Prospects 2022 (WPP 2022) report discussing these problems. Let’s see what the report says!
What is the World Population Prospects report?
The World Population Prospects (WPP) is a report published by the UN every two years. This report gives us information about the human population. This year, the UN released the 2022 edition of the report. It was released on World Population Day on 11th July.
What is mentioned in the WPP 2022 report?
The report mentions many interesting things. It says that the population will reach 8 billion before the end of 2022. By the 2080s, the population will be around 10.4 billion
Only eight countries (India and seven others) will be responsible for more than half of the population increase.
By next year, India will have the highest population in the world, taking over from China!
What will be the effects of population growth?
More people means more need for resources such as food, electricity, water, infrastructure, etc. For example, we will have to get more water from our rivers to meet our water needs. More forests may have to be cut down to make living spaces for the growing number of people.
