The world’s largest iceberg!

The largest iceberg in the world is called A23a. It broke off from Antarctica in 1986. After that, it got stuck in the Weddell Sea (a part of the Southern Ocean) and stayed there for a long time. Later, it started to move again!

A23a is so big that it could cover three big cities in the USA: New York City, Los Angeles, and Houston.

In April 2024, the iceberg got stuck once more. But by December, it started moving again. Now, it is going towards a small island called South Georgia in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

This island is home to many seals and penguins. The iceberg might cause problems for them.

About South Georgia Island.

South Georgia Island is far in the southern Atlantic Ocean, between Argentina and Antarctica. It is famous for having many penguins and seals. The island has the largest group of king penguins in the world! There are also many macaroni penguins and big elephant seals!

Animals like penguins and seals need the water around the island to find food and have their babies.

A23a’s impact on South Georgia Island.

If the iceberg gets too close to South Georgia, it could cause big problems. Penguins, seals, and other animals need the water around the island to eat and take care of their babies. If the iceberg blocks the water, it might be hard for them to find food.

In the past, icebergs stuck near the island made it hard for animals to find food. Many baby penguins and seals died because they couldn’t eat. If A23a gets stuck near South Georgia, it might happen again.

Right now, scientists are watching the iceberg closely. We don’t know what will happen. Maybe it will float away and not hit the island. We’ll have to wait and see!
