Read this heart-touching story by the head librarian of GRG Modern Scholars.
Being a librarian has benefits. Students who are subject to disciplinary actions are asked to spend their time in the library.
For the final six months of his grade, my sixth-grader, X, and I spent time in the library. Due to his hyperactivity, he was irate and refused to complete his schoolwork in the library. I gently persuaded him to do his task by telling him that he could read books since he was an avid reader. I took on the character of a mother hen and looked out for my little chick.
We lost contact after X left the school. In 2020, he returned to school in grade 10. Wearing a mask, he stood outside the library entrance and inquired, "Do you remember me?" I could not identify him. Reintroducing himself, he said that he was X. "I am grateful that you were my friend in grade 6, and I will always remember you," he said.
I had happy tears welling up in my eyes as I watched him develop from an overly energetic youngster to a serious and mature teenager. I am grateful to you, X, for making me a better teacher and a better human being.
