The discussion of the evening was about “How Much Sugar Is Too Much Sugar?”. Our excited panellists came out with all their thoughts, feelings and questions about sugar. They shared their personal experiences with cavities, sugar-crashes and even discussed how to limit sugar in their diets!

Chetna, Jayant, and Siddhant pondered over some bad experiences they had with toothaches and cavities. This led them to make a trip to the dentist’s office, where they were warned against the ill effects of sugar on dental health!

Jayant spoke about how it’s not just sugar in candy and cola we must watch out for! But some natural sugars exist in fruits and dairy. He also mentioned that these are good sugars and they keep us healthy. Chetna pointed out that in school, when a classmate faints due to heat or exhaustion, the teacher offers them a toffee. This is because sugar can provide us with spurts of energy during the day.

Siddhant promptly brought up that sugar can lead to heart disease, obesity and diabetes too! Pratigya added that too much sugar can cause the body to create resistance to insulin. She also pointed out that sugar is in everything! That’s why sugarcane is so widely grown by farmers as a cash crop.

The kids also discussed what a life without sugar would be like and the positive and negative effects it would have on their mood, energy level, and nutrition. They also spoke about the importance of checking the labels and ingredients in products they buy at the supermarket. Watch the full episode so that you can also be impressed with how knowledgeable these kids are!
