Read the thoughtful entries from our opinion piece writing contest.

Blog Graphics - 1 (3).pngLast weekend, we held an opinion piece writing contest. We asked our readers to pick any article published on Newsahoot in July 2024 and write their opinion on the chosen article. The participants had to back their opinions with reasoning and supporting evidence.

This contest helped students build critical thinking, analytical, research, and writing skills by encouraging them to evaluate information and form reasoned, evidence-backed opinions.

While all responses were excellent, we have winners for the junior and senior categories! Congratulations to Bhavika Chopra, a student of Class 3 and Shruti Srivastava, a student of Class 7 from Holy Child Public School, Sector 75, Faridabad.

Both Bhavika and Shruti chose the article titled 'Sierra Leone Bans Child Marriage' and presented their opinions.

Shruti's entry:

Sierra Leone has done a very inspiring and empowering act for girls by banning child marriage. Child marriage is an act which stops a girl from completing school and is given the responsibility to take care of a house.

Imagine how we would feel if we were married underage, stopped from attending school and had to face domestic violence. If our parents scold us a little, then we also blame them, get angry, and cry, don't we? So imagine how the girls who are suffering from child marriage would feel. It takes their childhood away; in the age of playing and attending school, they are married and have to do household work. If they are able to get a good education, they can support their family, but child marriage is not a way to support the family.

We should all learn one more thing from this: we should respect our parents for giving us good food and supporting us in completing our education. We should love and appreciate them.

Whenever you see someone suffering from child marriage, you should inform an adult to take legal action. If nobody is there, we can also call the child helpline number 1098, which is available 24/7.

Remember to help the needy because one day it could be you too, so please help people in this situation.

Bhavika and Shruti won a DIY Candle Set and Desk organiser, respectively. They will receive the prizes at school.
