What is the Metaverse?
Imagine a [[virtual::Something made with computer technology that does not exist in real life.]] world in which people work, live, shop, and talk with one another. This is known as the metaverse.
People create [[avatars::An image of a human or an animal on a computer screen that represents a specific computer user in a computer game or on social media.]] to represent themselves in the metaverse. Also, in the metaverse, [[digital currency::A form of money that exists only in electronic form.]] is used to buy various types of items. A person can roam around the metaverse using a virtual reality headset and [[controllers::A device that is used to control something.]].
Many companies, like Google, Amazon, Infosys, Wipro, etc., are working on developing the metaverse.
What exactly is the difference between the metaverse and the internet?
The internet is a huge network that has millions of computers and [[servers::A host network or the main computer programme.]]. Once online, Internet users may [[browse::To look through something for information.]] websites, purchase and sell items, etc. They can also talk to others.
The metaverse, on the other hand, has no aim of competing with or replacing the internet. Instead, it intends to [[expand::To increase in size, number, or importance.]] on it.
People use the internet to search for information. A user can, however, live in the metaverse to some extent, although virtually. Governments have an online presence that they can expand to the metaverse.
Barbados (a Caribbean country) will be building an office in the metaverse, especially in the most famous virtual world, “Decentraland.”
Okay, so what is Decentraland, and how many people are using it currently?
Decentraland, managed by the Decentraland Foundation, has been one of the most active virtual worlds in the metaverse since it was launched. It is free to use and can be used by anyone. However, not many people are using it.
Decentraland is not doing as well as expected. Despite billion-dollar [[valuations::The estimated value of something.]], it has made little progress. According to data [[aggregator::An online company that gathers information about the services and products of other companies and publishes it on a single website.]] DappRadar, Decentraland recently had 38 active users (that's low!).
Why is there such a low number of Decentraland users?
Decentraland is currently in its early stages and lacks [[features::Anything important or interesting about a place or thing.]] that would attract a large number of users.
Also, not everyone on the globe has enough knowledge about the metaverse. So, many people do not use it at all.
