A new chapter in chess
FIDE, the world body that manages chess, has announced a new tournament called the Total Chess World Championship Tour. It will start in 2026 and will give a new title called the World Combined Champion.
This tour wants to find the best all-round chess player. Someone who is strong in every type of game, not just in long and slow matches.
A new kind of World Championship
In chess, there are usually separate champions for [[Classical::A traditional and slower form of chess where each player has a long time, often hours, to think and make their moves.]], [[Rapid::A faster version of chess where each player has less time, usually between 10 to 60 minutes, to complete all their moves.]], and [[Blitz::A very fast form of chess where each player has only a few minutes, usually 3 to 5, to finish the entire game.]] games. But this new championship will bring all three together.
There will be four major tournaments every year, held in different countries. The first three events will feature 24 top players each. The best among them will move to the Grand Final, where only four players will compete for the title of World Combined Champion.
The winners will also receive prize money and earn spots in the [[Candidates Tournament::A major chess competition that decides which player will challenge the current World Chess Champion.]], which decides who gets to challenge for the Classical World Champion title.
The new ‘Fast Classic’ format
One of the biggest changes is a new time format called Fast Classic.
In normal Classical chess, each player gets about 90 minutes or more to make their moves. In Fast Classic, each player will get 45 minutes, plus 30 seconds extra after every move. This makes games shorter and more exciting while still giving time to think carefully.
The Total Chess Tour will mix Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz games so that the champion must perform well in every format, not just one.
What makes this championship special?
This tour wants to find the most complete chess player: someone who can think deeply, plan fast, and make smart moves under pressure.
Because the games will be shorter, tournaments will finish sooner, and will be easier for fans to watch online. It will make chess more fun to play and more enjoyable to watch.
How are the players reacting?
The players have different thoughts about it. Some like the idea and say it brings a new kind of challenge, while others think it might confuse people about who the main world champion is.
Still, most agree that this new format could shape the future of chess.
The World Combined Championship might soon become the ultimate test of skill, speed, and strategy for the next generation of players.
