What are chores?
Chores are small activities we do at home. Not every activity can be called a chore. It has to be something we do routinely. This could be like watering the plants or putting away your toys. But why should we do them? Easy! Because chores help us keep our surroundings neat and tidy.
Well, what’s in it for me?
Many kids (and even some adults) think chores are boring! But doing chores could actually make you smarter! This is what La Trobe University in Australia has discovered.
Their study shows that kids that finish more chores could be better in studies! That’s because chores require you to focus! You also need to follow instructions. These help us even when we need to study or write an exam.
What else does the study say?
The study also says that doing chores can help you plan better. Activities like cooking and gardening are helpful for children.
Planning and remembering are important skills. We need these skills to do many things as adults. Practice makes perfect! So if you keep practising these skills by doing chores, you will soon do better in academics.
I’m not convinced. Chores bore me.
No one really loves doing chores. Wouldn’t we rather go out to play? But chores are important for us. When someone gives you a chore to do, it means they trust you to get the job done. It teaches us to help others.
Chores can make us feel good about ourselves. When you finish a chore, you can proudly tell your mom that you did it all by yourself.
How can we make chores fun?
If we can make news fun then we can surely make chores fun! Chores can feel boring when you have to do them alone. You could always ask your mom or your dad to help you out. But what if nobody is free to clean with you? Then put on some music! You could even dance while you clean up your messy room. Everything can be made fun, even chores!
