An Important Deal
In January 2026, India and the European Union made an important trade deal, called the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The deal was announced at the India-EU summit that took place in New Delhi.
Leaders said this deal is important because it connects two of the world's largest economies and will help in trade and create jobs for many years.
Talking for Many Years
A trade is like a promise between countries to lower taxes when they trade things. India and Europe started talking about this deal in 2007, but stopped in 2013 because they could not agree on some rules.
Later, the world economy changed, and India and Europe wanted to work with trusted partners. Talks started again in 2022 and ended in January 2026 with the FTA being signed.
What Changes With This Deal?
This deal makes trade easier and cheaper between India and Europe.
Europe will lower taxes on many Indian products like clothes, leather goods, jewellery, tea, spices, fruits, and seafood. This helps Indian products sell better in the European market.
India will also lower taxes on European products like machines, medicines, chemicals, aircraft parts, olive oil, and some expensive cars.
However, products like milk, grains, and poultry are protected to help Indian farmers.
How Will It Help?
Many Indian workers may benefit as exports increase and jobs may grow. Small businesses can also grow because the rules are made simpler.
Indian workers, like engineers, teachers, doctors, and researchers, will find it easier to work in Europe.
European companies will also get better access to India’s big market.
Looking Ahead
The India–EU Free Trade Agreement brings India and Europe closer to make a strong partnership. Over time, it can improve trade and help both sides grow together in the global economy.
