Who did Magnus Carlsen defeat?

Norway's Magnus Carlsen won the FIDE Chess World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan. He won against India's Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. He won the tournament after a three-day final match.

Who is Magnus Carlsen?

Magnus Carlsen is really good at chess. His father taught him how to play chess at the age of five. At eight, he played in his first competition. Even when he was a kid, his teachers were impressed by how good he was at chess. He won his first big tournament in 2004. He's won a lot of tournaments since then.

When he was 13, he became a grandmaster. In 2010, Carlsen became the number one chess player in the world. He continues to hold this title today. He became the youngest player to reach the top spot at the age of 19.

Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa is a chess prodigy and grandmaster from India. He became the youngest international master in 2016 at the age of 10. He started playing when he was only 3 years old!

By age seven, he had received the title of International Chess Federation master. This is the third-highest title a chess player can get after grandmaster and international master.

Even though Magnus Carlsen defeated him, many people praised him. Before the finals, he defeated the second-best player in the world, Fabiano Caruana (USA), and the third-best, Hikaru Nakamura (USA). That shows he's great at chess. Let’s hope he wins this tournament in the future.
